Midwood Park
Midwood Park, like other similar neighborhoods in Brooklyn,
was built as a suburban development in the first decade of the century on what
was formerly farmland. When the neighborhood was being developed, the names
of “Midwood” and “Newkirk” were suggested for it, but
“Midwood Park” – describing the park-like tranquility of its
landscaped malls. On Foster Avenue, the ornamental columns grace the entrance
of each block which are remnants of the once gated community.
The Midwood Park Association, founded in 1908, and the neighboring
Fiske Terrace Association (1907) are working with the NYC Landmark Commission
toward historic district designation for both communities.
Midwood Park is a vibrant and active community. In recent
years, young families from brownstone Brooklyn and Manhattan have moved to the
neighborhood and are enjoying the small-town atmosphere of the community that
was present since its beginning.
